Nowadays we are faced with continuous change in
nearly all areas politics, economy, society, and
culture. Through such change, information technology
is changing the basic paradigm of our way of thinking.
At a time where geographical borders are becoming
no more than a mere line on a map, it is essential,
now than ever before, that interpreters and translators
take on their role in bridging the communication
gap amongst those who do not share the same language.
High quality interpretation and translation are
a prerequisite to actively responding to this wave
of openness and liberalization.
In 1997, to meet the arising needs of the times,
Ewha Womans University established the Graduate
School of Translation and Interpretation (GSTI).
For the past decade GSTI has been offering the highest
level of training to students who graduate and thrive
as professional interpreters and translators in
the local and international markets.
The Ewha Research Institute for Translation Studies
(ERITS) was established to further advance education
and research of interpretation and translation not
only in practice but also in theory. Promoting exchange
of inter-disciplinary research; hosting international
conferences that discuss interpretation and translation
on the academic and practical level; holding workshops
by inviting renowned scholars; translating books
on interpretation and translation studies are some
of the activities of ERITS, to name a few.
I am confident that Ewha GSTI and ERITS will take
the lead and play a pivotal role in laying the foundations
for the Korean society in facing this new wave of
globalization. |
